I Had To Give In Just One Last Time…

I know I said I was done reading self-help books but this one has been on my reading list since the beginning of time. Or at least since I’ve started reading books towards the end of 2018.

To be fair, The One Thing by Garry Keller isn’t entirely a self-help book. I consider it a productivity book that happens to include some ‘self-help’ elements. It over exactly what high achievers do to ignore distractions and reach their goals.

Imagine having the blueprint for extreme productivity, the secrets that Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates all used to achieve unexplainable success in their lives.

That’d be nice, right?…

Although I can’t explain exactly what they did to achieve their success, I can do the next best thing and tell you what they have in common. I’ll start by breaking down the main idea from The One Thing, and explain how you can follow the same steps to reach your own goals.

Start by creating a to-do list, out of that list pick out 20% of things you should do, then shorten that list even further to just ONE THING you MUST do before anything else. Gary Keller talks about the inefficiency that comes from trying to multitask by saying ” Multitasking is a lie. It’s just the opportunity to mess more than 1 thing up at the same time.”

If you have trouble coming up with your One Thing, ask yourself this question “What is the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything will be easier or unnecessary?”. Dig deep for the answer, the most important things don’t always scream the loudest.

Block time out of your day with no distractions to get your One Thing done early in the morning when your willpower is at its highest (preferably 4 hours a day). Use this time to complete the task that is the most impactful, be intentionally productive and momentum should carry you for the rest of the day.

The Highly Productive Person’s Daily Energy Plan

  1. Meditate or pray for spiritual energy.
  2. Eat right, exercise, and sleep sufficiently for physical energy.
  3. Hug, kiss, and laugh with loved ones for emotional energy.
  4. Set goals, plan, and calendar for mental energy.
  5. Time block your ONE Thing for business energy.

Personal Review

Great book if you struggle with productivity or procrastination, I’ve been much more intentional and aware of what I invest my time in. (Part of the reason why I’m writing this instead of watching Tiktok videos). It’s been difficult to do and I don’t expect it to get any easier until it becomes a habit to concentrate so much energy on one thing.

Of course, I have my doubts about the effectiveness of this routine but I hate to be skeptical of something I haven’t tried myself.
